New website plans...

I've been planning to create a new website for at least a year, despite updating images on the old site I really wanted something new, different design, logo, feel. 

So having gotten my new business cards designed and printed last month, I thought I'd better start looking at bringing the site into line with the new logo design.

Here is the initial design, this has just been quickly put together in Photoshop, now the hard bit, making it in Dreamweaver, then making it work!

I really hope Amazon aren't keeping tabs on me, because this week and last week all I've done is shoot on white backgrounds...

So I set an Instagram account up again... Yeah I know, I know.

So summer has arrived... Maybe.

So how we can tell that summer has finally arrived, because ice cream is being consumed outside rather than in the warmth of the house. We are also getting treated to more summery skies. Though not today, or this week, rain forecast till the weekend. This kind of mucks up my plans, I have a load of exterior lighting to photograph, has to be wall mounted, has to be done in the dry. So I have my fingers crossed that next week does bring a ray of sunshine, and my kids will probably want more ice cream too.

So take one child, a toy tin aeroplane, a flying hat, and some goggles...

So take one child, a toy tin aeroplane, a flying hat, and some goggles, then make him stand on top of two apple boxes, surround the child with lighting from various modifiers, lay down on the floor and take a picture. Ideas always sound so simple. 

I know I've already posted information about this shoot, but now I've added a lighting layout, so you'll just have to put up with it again. Two Bowens 500w Pro heads were placed either side of the model, pointing slightly up at about 15°, these were both fitted with 30cm x 140cm stripboxes with fabric grids, set to 1/2 power. A Bowens 750w Pro head was set level with the model to camera left, this was fitted with a 90cm Octa-softbox, it was set to 1/4 power. The background was provided by mother nature, she seemed particularly generous the evening of the shoot, the sky was blue and streaked with wispy high cloud, most of the week leading up to the shoot was dull, grey, and usually accompanied with lashings of rain, well it is summer here in the UK.

For most of the shoot my model performed brilliantly, though had to be reminded to "NOT LOOK AT THE CAMERA!" a few times

Okay I missed the blog's page views clicking over to 70,000, it happened at some point this morning, it could have been whilst I was sat in the dentist's chair, or as I negotiated my trolley around Tesco, probably by the frozen food section, or maybe by the fridge packed full of sausages. I digress, so 70,025, it's not a lot really, I must do better.

Project: The Pilot... Takes off!

This project has been on my mind for a while, it's been nagging away in my sub conscience, every time I look up and see an aircraft cutting its way across the blue sky I think of how I will approach the project. Well today it started, the sky looked good, not just a sea of blue, but plenty of wispy cloud to keep it interesting... And we were off.

Perched on top of two full size apple boxes, with several of his friends cheering him on, my son took my direction fairly well, though as with any kid they don't always listen. I was laid on the floor shooting upwards, so the sky looked big and uninterrupted by any buildings, or trees in the background. Using a 90cm Octa-softbox to camera left and two 30cm x 140cm strip-softboxes either side of my model I got the lighting pretty much how I'd envisioned it. I'd originally thought the project would be in colour, maybe muted tones, but experimenting with Black & White I was sold on this instead. There will be more images to come, my other younger son has started making noises that he wants his photo taken with his plane... What have I started?

It hasn't been the best day ever here at Alistair Kerr Photography...

I photographed my neighbours dog Stanley last week. He was very good in front of the camera and lights, but truth be told he was more interested in the bowl of dog biscuits his owner Sheila had in her hand than posing for my camera. That said I did manage to capture a few good images between him munching his biscuit treats.

The shoot came about because Sheila was worried that he might be ill, they'd already lost two dogs of the same breed, flat-coat retriever,  to cancer in the past, and Stanley was exhibiting similar problems now. So Sheila wanted some photographs, just incase, he was  off to have tests at the vets this week. 

Today they viewed the photographs, there were tears, the tests have proved their worst possible fears too be true, Stanley has cancer, I should say had, Stanley was put to sleep this afternoon, Sheila and Ian just couldn't let him suffer any more pain.

Another 1st Saturday of the month, must be skateboard shots time...

Set up my Fuji X100, a couple of Canon 550EZ speedlights on small stands and started snapping a few of the guys that turned up for last night's MAS skate jam at Deeside Skakepark, I didn't get a shot of everyone as a few sneaked out for a crafty fag when they saw the flashes going off... NEXT TIME GUYS!

I need to thank Tony for offering to take my picture, though you can see from these why I try and stay behind the camera.

Old men, maple, and urethane...

I'm a skateboarder, I've been a skateboarder since I was 11 years old, it's is something I love, it's in the blood, I've spilt blood doing it, I've broken bones, yet I couldn't give it up.

I've been taking skateboarding photos since I was 12, or might have been 11, the years do seem to fuzz together as you look back on them from afar. I took these images below last night, once again the first Saturday of the month heralded the MAS (Middle Aged Shred) session at Deeside skatepark, men with maple, aluminium and urethane, spent the evening doing what they love, skateboarding, fun was had, pain was on the agenda too, because you have dues to pay, they are paid in scrapes, bumps, and blood.

We know our limitations, but you always try pushing them that bit further, otherwise what is the point. I managed to get a few hours skating done between stints with the camera, so I ache a bit today, but it's a good ache.

I took these images with a Fuji X100, had a couple of Canon 550EX speedlights on small stands fired by iShoot transmitter and receivers, before I've had the full Canon kit with me and a brace of Bowens heads, stands, and modifiers, it's nice to travel light.

To anyone upset by the graphic of a poodle with half a cat in it's mouth, all I can say is that skateboard graphics are not famed for their cuteness.

I realise I need to get my "Old Skateboarders" project moving again, I've neglected it due to working commitments, I need to rectify that.

Fuji X100 and why I love it.

This is my youngest boy, he'll be 5 next week, here he is squeezed into the Little Tikes car belonging to our neighbour's child, who is 18 months old, he looks quite guilty, and he should be, he is sat in a stolen vehicle. The police weren't called, the vehicle was handed back, but I quickly got a picture with the Fuji X100 that was hanging over my shoulder, before he managed to get out. That is why I love the X100, it is always there. It has got a place in my camera bag with all the Canon bodies and lenses, but it never seems to be there. It's always in the pocket of the coat I'm wearing, or in the laptop bag when I go and visit clients or off out on a location recon. I seem to pick it up without thinking, it's there with my phone, keys, and wallet. Another essential.

Funny kind of Sunday

I seem to have spent my Sunday thinking about work, though all I've really done is clean up and sort out the garage and take a ton of junk to the tip.

Whilst I was at the tip I found an iPhone in a wallet, it had credit cards and a drivers licence in it. The phone had no password protection so I opened up Maps.app and put the address from the drivers licence into it, a short ride with Siri giving me directions, and I was handing the phone over to its owner, who was a little shell shocked. His wife just kept saying "but people aren't that honest anymore", well some of us are, and I know that I'd like to think if I lost my phone/wallet someone would seek me out and return it.

So on that note, and with karma firmly on my side I'm off to do some editing.

New iMac... So now I'm up and running again

My MacPro died, 4 years old, it was a true workhorse, but life goes on and thanks too Jigsaw24 and Photolease, I now have a lovely new 27" iMac. It's now loaded up with all the software I need to get back to work, and I have a stack of work to get done...
